Mormons

- One of their largest groups is the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
- The church of Mormon was founded by Joseph Smith Jr. back in the 1820's. As the story goes, Mr. Smith announced one day that he had stumbled across a couple'a golden plates buried in a hill that were written up by ancient American prophets.

- Now at this point you may ask, why hadn't anyone else stumbled across the plates up to this point? That can be answered by the golden guy with the trumpet on the right who is an angel named Moroni. He gaurded the plates and directed Joseph to them, explaining that it was up to him to translate them into what is now the Book of Mormon.
- The Book of Mormon contains tales of Jesus visiting ancient inhabitants of the Americas, the last of which was Moroni who recorded the account and later showed up to direct Smith to them.
- The Book of Mormon claims to be based on historical fact, though the archeological evidence for the claim has been quite devastating.
- Mormons believe that the highest form of Salvation is called "exaltation" where you can become your own god or goddess and that this is what the future holds for its faithful members.
- Mormons adhere to the "Word of Wisdom" which is a health code that forbids alcohol, narcotics, coffee, tea, basically anything that could be considered addictive.
- Spreading the good news is very encouraged and you can often see Mormons going door to door spreading their faith. (The guys with the white shirts and black ties on bikes with Bibles are usually Mormons out to spread their faith.)
- Group conformity is very encouraged and questioning authority can be a sign of apostasy (the Mormon equivalent to heresy in the Catholic church.)

- Mormons are very strict as far as dating and believe passionate kissing outside of marriage is a sin. Young Mormons are advised not to engage in any activities while dating that would be inappropriate for a brother and sister.
- Mormons discourage interracial dating.
- Most Mormons only marry within the faith because they believe that exaltation can only be achieved as part of a couple.
- If a young Mormon marries outside the temple, they are believed to be cut off from the possibility of exaltation unless they repent.
- One of the most famous trademarks of Mormonism was that in the 1800s it allowed a form of Polygamy which many people believe is still the norm today. Sorry guys, but convert on back to your own religion, because it was discontinued before the 20th century due to it being vigorously opposed by most of the rest of America. Though there are small fundamentalist Mormon groups that still participate in polygamy, it is shunned by the major Mormon groups (i.e. Church of Latter Day Saints).
- Mormonism claims that other churches have strayed from Christ's original teachings and that it's a return to them.
- Mormons do believe in the Bible, but believe that the Book of Mormon is equal in authority with it. There is also a book called The Pearl of Great Price that is considered scripture as well as the Doctrines and Covenants also known as the D and C.
- Do believe in Jesus as the Son of God and crucified Savior, but reject the idea of the Trinity.
- Claim that the Bible prophesied that that there would be an "apostasy" which basically means that people would stray from the Teachings of Jesus and the Disciples. But also that Joseph Smith would clear things up before the 2nd Coming of Christ.
- Believe in Baptism for the dead.
- Highly encourage family history research and host one of the largest free genealogical libraries in the world in Salt Lake City.
